Members of the 6th Brigade halted in a congested part of a sunken road during their march to Fricourt in a rear area of the Somme battlefield. The I Anzac Corps had been ordered back to the Somme after seven weeks at Ypres to take part in an advance to the outskirts of Bapaume, to be concluded before winter set in.
