Description

Informal group portrait of unidentified Australian soldiers, probably of the 1st Battalion, with souvenirs captured from the Germans in the battle of Pozieres. Many of the men are wearing helmets (Pickelhauben); a few are sporting the caps worn by German soldiers, and all have their hands raised, possibly in a feigned gesture of surrender. In the front on the ground is a machine gun.
