Description
Four unidentified Australians pose on the mounting of the 15 inch German naval gun that was captured by the 3rd Battalion in Arcy Wood during the Battle of Proyart on 23 August 1918. Note the words painted near the bottom, 'Captd by - Bn', and the tree branches that had been used as camouflage. The gun was found separated from its carriage, with the barrel blown off at the breech and half buried beside the mounting. It had already been wrecked by an explosion, accidental or intended, when it was captured.
