Description

An amateur film taken in the 1960s by C Fargher while serving onboard the RAN Majestic Class aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne. Panning shots of Hong Kong harbour. Passing a ship wreck. At sea, Bristol Sycamore helicopter taking off forward HMAS Melbourne. Fairey Gannet anti-submarine aircraft starting engines and billowing black smoke on start up. A Sea Venom of unfolds wings preparing for catapult take off. Gannet catapult take offs filmed from Melbourne's control tower. Gannet 301 unfolds wings and taxis to position for catapult take off. Bristol Sycamore lands a stern on flight deck. Long shot of escorts a destroyer and a frigate. Deck level scenes showing crew relaxing some in the shade of aircraft and others lying in the sun. Melbourne approaching a refuel ship. Pans of harbour and vessels. At sea long shot of aircraft carrier. USN helicopters landing on Melbourne's deck one is in Navy blue colours the other in grey.
