Description

During a reconnaissance along Route 328 in the Thua Tich area, north-east of Nui Dat, an armoured personnel carrier of A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, detonated an enemy mine. The armoured personnel carrier was one of several probing Route 328 for any signs of enemy activity along the abandoned road. Several carriers had passed over the mine before it exploded under the tracks of the carrier which was carrying a group of infantrymen. The explosion tore the track from the vehicle and badly damaged the roadwheels. Ten soldiers inside the carrier were shaken up but only one received any injuries when the force threw him against the armoured roof of the cabin. Within minutes, an Army combat engineer team had swept the area in case of other mines, and a 'Dustoff' helicopter arrived from Nui Dat to evacuate the wounded soldier. The incident occurred during Operation Capital which is being directed by the Commander of the 1st Australian Task Force, Brigadier C. M. I. (Sandy) Pearson. (Also identified: Crew Commander of APC Sgt Dave Brook of Box Hill, Vic; Tpr Bob English of Nelsons Bay, NSW; Crew Commander Sgt Graeme Millington of Puckapunyal, Vic; Private James Brown, injured soldier).
