Description

ANZAC Day in Vietnam this year will be very little different for most Australian troops than any other day. Many will be on operations and those in base at Nui Dat will hold commemorative services to honour the men of other wars who died in battle. At the 1st Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, at Nui Dat, a simple service will be held on ANZAC morning. In preparation, the Regiment held a rehearsal this week. Held on The Oval, the Regiment formed up, sentries took post around the flags and memorials to gunners killed in Vietnam, and three Army Chaplains conducted the service. As the sentries rested on their arms reversed, the padres said prayers, Last Post was played and the flags were lowered. The traditional two minutes silence was observed and then Reveille was played, the flags again flew from the flagpole and then the troops returned to their tasks around Nui Dat. (Also identified: Gunner Brian English Pyrmont, NSW; RSM Sid Penhaligon of Hughes, ACT; 2IC 1 Fd Regt Major Graham Taylor of Ashgrove, Qld; (PD) Chaplain Ivor Clift of Hawthorn, Vic; Bugler Cpl Ray Gallagher of Penrith, NSW, 4RAR; (RC) Tom Shanahan of Tamworth, NSW; (C of E) Padre Lewis Nyman of Singleton, NSW).
