Description

Rugby Union made its debut in Phouc Tuy Province of South Vietnam when a team from the 6th Battalion RAR played a team from the 161st New Zealand Artillery Battery at the Ba Ria Stadium. New Zealand won the toss and kicked off watched by hundreds of Vietnamese and troops. The field was marked out with white mine tape - and at times the players fell victim to the moving fabric which was frequently lifted by players' feet. New Zealand won the match by a nine point margin. Identified personnel: Brigadier O D Jackson, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) C M Townsend, C O of 6 RAR, Lt Col R M C Cubis C O of 1 Field Regiment, Captain Ted Stevenson.
