Description

1. SEATO Exercise Sea Devil. SEATO's twenty first maritime exercise. HMAS Queenborough, Voyager and Vendetta escort HMAS Melbourne on one of the longest anti-submarine and naval air defence exercises at Subic Bay, Philippines. On shore RAN sailors sightseeing. A United States Navy submarine that will be acting as the enemy for the exercise. Warships led by Gearing Class Destroyer USS Epperson (DD-719). The exercise includes ships from Australia, USA, UK Pakistan, New Zealand Philippines and Thailand. HMAS Vendetta refueling from a US tanker. Physical exercises onboard Vendetta. HMAS Melbourne as Sea Devil's flagship leads the fleet into harbour followed by the aircraft carriers USS Bennington and HMS Ark Royal and the other ships in a column fourteen miles long. HMAS Melbourne fires a twenty one gun salute with her Bofors anti aircraft guns. Official calls as the senior officers of the participating navies board HMAS Melbourne. Fifty ships, one hundred and fifty aircraft and sixteen thousand men took part in Sea Devil. 2. RAN in Hong Kong. HMAS Yarra and Parramatta visit Hong Kong on their first duty with the British Commonwealth Strategic Reserve. HMAS Melbourne was also in Hong Kong to have her flight deck repainted. Shows Chinese labourers chipping and scraping off the off paint. Sailors sightseeing in the city. The Australian Fleet Band perform a concert at a refugee settlement. 3. Midshipmen graduate. The Royal Australian Naval College Jervis Bay. Twenty new officers of the RAN and RNZN are the first Midshipmen to complete the navy's revised scientific age course. 4. Japanese visit. Australia's biggest fleet visit to Japan Two thousand five hundred sailors of five combat ships arrive at Yokohama. Rear Admiral McNickel and flag ship Captain, Captain Smith are presented with flowers by Japanese women in traditional costume. A Rugby football match between the Australians and the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force. RAN sailors visit the shrine at Kamakura escorted by Japanese beauty queens. 5. Christmas Island. HMAS Queenborough arrives at Christmas Island. This is the first visit by an Australian warship since the island became an Australian Territory three and a half years before.
Sport events and a party are held to celebrate the ship's visit. Home from the sea. Ships of the combat fleet head for home after steaming twenty thousand miles in South East Asia.
