The gymnasium was opened earlier that night by the Commander of the Australian Force Vietnam (COMAFV), Major General R. A. Hay of Red Hill, ACT (rear). The opening coincided with an Army sponsored concert party starring Bev Harrell, the Wills Sisters Anne and Sue, Ricky and Tammy and a three man band.
