Description
The Commander of the 1st Australian Logistic Support Group (1ALSG), Colonel M. B. Simkin of Red Hill, ACT, addresses soldiers of his unit in the Kevin Wheatley Gymnasium. The gymnasium was opened earlier that night by the Commander of the Australian Force Vietnam (COMAFV), Major General R. A. Hay of Red Hill, ACT (rear). The opening coincided with an Army sponsored concert party starring Bev Harrell, the Wills Sisters Anne and Sue, Ricky and Tammy and a three man band. The gymnasium was named after Warrant Officer Class 2 Kevin Arthur (Dasher) Wheatley the first winner of a Victoria Cross in the Vietnam war. The medal was awarded posthumously.
