Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey. 1915. This photograph was to have been the first of a series taken from Russell's Top, by C.E.W. Bean, to form a panorama of the surrounding Anzac country. The rest of the series could not be taken as the photographers were observed by the enemy, a shell from a Turkish battery bursting 30 yards away.
