Description

Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey. July 1915. Two historic points are shown here. Slightly to the left is Ari Burnu Knoll which was the first objective of the 3rd Australian Brigade on landing at Gallipoli. Before the irresistible bayonet rush of the Anzacs the Turks retreated from this commanding spot to Plugge's Plateau, which is seen on the right. From here the enemy were still able to pour machine-gun and rifle fire on to the beach where the troops were landing. After the knoll was cleared a further series of rushes was directed at the plateau, and the Turks were driven from it and well back to a position from which direct fire on to the beach was impossible.
