Description

Imbros, Greece. July 1915. The balloon ship Hecla and warships. The Hecla was in attendance on the fleet from the first day. She carried a large captive balloon forward which used to be sent up with a cradle attachment from which observers directed the naval fire. Bombs were often dropped at this from Turkish aeroplanes, but it was never hit. The balloon is shown in its cradle.
