Description

The graves of 45 Able Seaman (AB) John Courtney (AB J E Walker served as John Courtney), Royal Australian Naval Reserve, died of wounds, and Lieutenant Commander C B Elwell, Royal Navy, killed in action, at the landing of the Australian Navy and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) at German New Guinea on 11 September 1914. These two sailors were originally buried at Kabakaul and in 1919 reinterred in the Rabaul military cemetery. Note: Postwar c 1950 they were transferred to the Bitapaka War cemetery.
