Studio portrait of 1069 Private Charles Samuel Tucker, 22nd Battalion from St Kilda, Victoria. A 22year old bookbinder prior to enlisting on 3 March 1915, he embarked for overseas with the Headquarters Staff from Melbourne on 10 May 1915 aboard HMAT Ulysses. After serving at Gallipoli he went on to serve on the Western Front where he was awarded a Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry at Pozieres, France and was promoted to Temporary Corporal on 14 August 1916. He was killed in action near Mouquet Farm, France on 26 August 1916 and is buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La-Boisselle, France.
