Studio portrait of 1980 Private (Pte) Hugh Vaughan Massie, 3rd Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion, of Malvern, Vic. Pte Massie enlisted on 22 May 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Anchises on 26 August 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 1 September 1916 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) on 18 December 1916. While serving with A Company in Bapaume, 2nd Lt Massie was wounded and captured by the Germans. He died in a prisoner of war camp on 8 March 1917.
