Description

Studio portrait of 5856 Lance Corporal Prosper Reginald Victor Le Roux, 24th Battalion from Red Bluff, Lang Lang, Victoria. A 31 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 8 February 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 16th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 2 October 1916 aboard HMAT Nestor. He served with the Battalion on the Western Front where he was killed in action at the Battle of Passchendaele (in Belgium) on 4 October 1917. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave. His younger brother, 19993 Gunner Albert Arthur Le Roux, 8th Field Artillery Brigade enlisted four days prior to Prosper and also fought at the Battle of Passchendaele. He died of wounds on 27 September 1917 and is buried at Lijssenthoeck Military Cemetery, Belgium. [See image H05544]
