Studio portrait of 455 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Ernest Baker, 38th Battalion from Maryville, Victoria. A 29 year old store keeper prior to enlisting on 30 March 1916, he embarked for overseas as a Private with A Company from Melbourne on 20 June 1916 aboard HMAT Runic. He served with the battalion in France and Belgium and was promoted to Lance Corporal. L Cpl Baker was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 12 October 1917 and buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
