Portrait of 1326 Private (Pte) John ‘Jack’ Conlen, 7th Battalion from Hawthorn, Victoria. A 25 year old mechanic and motor driver prior to enlisting on 9 November 1914, he embarked for overseas service with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Clan Macgillivray (A46) on 2 February 1915. After disembarking in Egypt and undergoing further training, he embarked for Gallipoli on 5 April 1915. The 7th Battalion landed at Gallipoli in the second wave on 25 April. Pte Conlen was killed in action at Lone Pine on 9 August 1915 and is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brother, 2859 Pte Bert Conlen, 2nd Pioneer Battalion was killed in action in France on 5 October 1918.
Note this image has been altered by a photographer to incorporate a neck and head from a different portrait as was published in the Melbourne Herald 11 August 1916 on page 6, and before the portrait was sent to the Australian War Museum (AWM).
