Studio portrait of 4132 Private (Pte) Gilbert Thomas Heyme, 22nd Battalion from Katamatite, Victoria. A 29 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 29 December 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 7 March 1916. After disembarking in Egypt, he proceeded to France in June 1916 and was reported missing in action on 5 August 1916. A later report stated that he had been killed in action and buried on the Pozieres battlefield. After the war his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. He was the step-brother of 21 Corporal George Burkitt MSM, 10th Machine Gun Company who returned to Australia.
