Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Maurice Leslie McLeod, 8th Battalion from Ballarat, Victoria shown wearing the uniform of the 71st Infantry Militia in which he served before joining the AIF. He was a 20 year old tailor prior to being appointed a Second Lieutenant on 24 August 1914 and he embarked for overseas service with F Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 19 October 1914. After disembarking in Egypt the Battalion underwent training before landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Lt McLeod was killed in action on that first day and is buried in Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brother Private Ernest Charles McLeod died in Ballarat on 8 August 1915, one month after enlisting [see image H05922].
