Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) Charles Albert Barnes, 11th Battalion from Guildford, Western Australia wearing the uniform of the 88th Infantry Militia in which he served prior to joining the AIF. Capt Barnes had also served in the 4th Western Australian Mounted Infantry in the Boer War. A 34 year old clerk prior to being appointed a Captain in the AIF on 9 September 1914, he embarked for overseas service with C Company from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 31 October 1914. Following further training in Egypt, the 11th Battalion landed at 4.30am on 25 April 1915 one mile south of Fisherman’s Hut on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Capt Barnes was killed in action on 28 April 1915 and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave. He had two brothers who also served: 5027 Corporal Gordon Howard Barnes, 11th Battalion who was killed in action in France on 10 August 1918, and Lieutenant John Viveash Barnes, 51st Battalion who was invalided back to Australia on 4 May 1918 with tuberculosis.
