Studio portrait of 5217 Private (Pte) Frank Raymond James, 3rd Battalion. A labourer from Gordon, NSW prior to enlistment, Pte James embarked with the 16th Reinforcements from Sydney on SS Makarini on 1 April 1916. Later promoted to Lance Corporal, on 8 November 1916, aged 20, he died of wounds received in action and was buried at Sheet Albert, France. His remains were later exhumed and re-interred in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France. His father, 5196 Pte Horace Charles James served with the 3rd Battalion. A brother 215 Driver Edward Charles James served with the 20th Battalion and a second brother 4462 Cecil Gordon James served on HMAS Sydney. All three returned to Australia.
