Studio portrait of 1971 Private (Pte) John Robert Milliken, 2nd Pioneer Battalion from Girilambone, NSW. A 28 year old engineer prior to enlisting on 14 June 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 3rd Reinforcements of the 19th Infantry Battalion from Sydney aboard HMAT Runic (A54) on 9 August 1915. He transferred to B Company, 18th Battalion at Gallipoli on 20 September 1915 and after returning to Egypt, transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion on 8 March 1916. Later that same month, he went with them to France. Pte Milliken was wounded in action on 1 August and died from his wounds the next day (2 August 1916) and was buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery, Warloy-Baillon, France. His brother, 5368 Lance Corporal George Andrew Milliken MM, 18th Battalion also served and returned to Australia. [See image H06198.]
