Studio portrait of 3946 Private William Ernest Sellens, 22nd Battalion from Auburn, Victoria. A 30 year old gardener and groom prior to enlisting on 12 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 8 February 1916 aboard HMAT Warilda. After joining the 22nd Battalion in France in May 1916, he was killed in action at the Battle of Pozieres on 5 August 1916. He is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
