Studio portrait of 5126 Private (Pte) Bernard Keogh, 11th Battalion from Northam, Western Australia. A 33 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 28 January 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 16th Reinforcements from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 31 March 1916. Following further training in Egypt, he went with the 11th Battalion to France in June and was wounded in action on 22 August 1916. After being evacuated to England for medical treatment and recuperation, he rejoined the 11th Battalion in France on 8 February 1917. Pte Keogh was reported missing in action on 16 April 1917 at Louverval Wood, France and later confirmed to have been killed. He is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. His brothers, 683 Pte Tom Keogh, 41st Battalion died of wounds in France on 9 March 1917 [see image H06358] and 3827 Pte Raymond Keogh, 8th Battalion was killed in action in Belgium on 28 October 1917 [see images H06359 and DA12475].
