Description

Studio portrait of 749 Private (Pte) Frederick Kelly, 3rd Battalion from Gilgandra, NSW. A 21 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 1 September 1914, he embarked for overseas service with D Company from Sydney, NSW aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 20 October 1914. Following further training in Egypt, he was with the 3rd Battalion when they landed at Gallipoli in the early morning of 25 April 1915. Pte Kelly was killed in action at Lone Pine on 7 August 1915 and is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey. His brother, 3075 Pte Thomas William Kelly, 13th Battalion was killed in action in France on 4 February 1917. [See image H06369A.]
