A wounded AIF soldier receives an affectionate welcome home at the Anzac Buffet in The Domain in Sydney. As men started returning from the front, the Anzac Buffet became the place where men were welcomed home.

Early in 1916, four entrepreneurial, influential, society women agitated to set up an Anzac Buffet in the Domain. It aimed to provide a gathering place for soldiers and sailors which was free of the temptations of liquor, gambling and “unattached women”. The Anzac Buffet was entirely volunteer run and operated on public donations. It was a place where women who volunteered with the Red Cross provided men in uniform with free meals and entertainment. There were similar Anzac Buffets established by female volunteers in Melbourne and London.
