Informal portrait of three officers of the 12th Battalion. From left: Major (Maj) Herbert Angus McPherson; Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Ernest Hilmer Smith; Maj John Askin Foster. Maj McPherson, an area officer from Hobart, Tas, Lt Col Hilmer Smith, a bank Superintendant from Sandy Bay, Tas and Maj Foster a farmer from Campbell Town, Tas All embarked with B Company from Hobart on HMAT Geelong on 20 October 1914. Having survived the war, Maj McPherson committed suicide on 24 December 1918 during the voyage back to Australia and was buried at sea. He is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Maj Foster was killed in action on 23 August 1918, aged 28 and is buried in the Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France. Lt Col Hilmer Smith was invalided back to Australia on 24 January 1916.
