Description

Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey. May 1915. AIF troops loading Japanese mortar ammunition on to mules at Anzac. The Japanese characters on the right hand box have been interpreted to read "trench mortar ammunition 3" then the last character was not clear enough to read. The box behind had JBG Explosive printed on it which was believed to stand for Japanese Bomb Gun Explosive. This mortar had the bomb and projecting charge as two separate units being brought together for firing. The AIF used a small number of Japanese mortars in the Gallipoli campaign. (Donor F.T. Small)
