Description

11034 Private Alex Hopes of Westwood, Rockhampton, Qld, a member of 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), relaxes as he listens records on a borrowed Decca 50 wind-up gramophone. He has waxed his moustache for the occasion. The gramophone is balanced on rocks, on a blanket, on a hill in a reserve area somewhere in Korea. The records, from companies such as Decca, HMV and Columbia, belong to members of 3RAR. The Columbia record on top of the pile at the front of the blanket is 'Bluebird of Happiness'. Written in white on the label is the name of the soldier who owns it, 'LENOY'. 19915 Sergeant S K J 'Len' Lenoy was killed little more than a month later on 24 April 1951 while commanding a machine gun section with 'A' Company at the Battle of Kapyong.
