Description

Unidentified machine gunners of 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), walk carefully down a steep hill as they set out on a patrol, possibly north of the Imjin River. The first soldier, the 'number two' machine gunner, is smoking a pipe and carrying a Vickers Machine Gun on his shoulder. He is equipped with an Owen machine carbine. The handgrip and barrel can be seen in profile near his waist. He has discarded the blast deflector from the front of the gun to save weight. The 'number one' machine gunner, carrying the tripod and dial sight, has just gone past and is out of the picture. The second soldier in the line is carrying a box of ammunition, a pick and a rifle. The third soldier in the line is a signalman with a radio pack on his back and earphones around his neck. The last soldier in the line is the 'number three' machine gunner. He is carrying a condensor can in his left hand and has ammunition belt boxes slung behind him. The condenser can is llinked to the condenser tube which can be seen wrapped around the water jacket of the gun.
