Informal portrait of Private (Pte) Andy Arnold of Southport, Qld, a member of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), smoking a cigarette as he waits in a trench for the word to move out on a night patrol. Arnold is wearing a sweat rag hat, armoured vest, has his face blackened and is carrying a Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) 303 rifle. Head gear is optional on these night patrols and anything may be worn except the steel helmets which are considered too noisy.
