Description

Near the British Commonwealth Base at Kure, where most Australians serving in Japan are stationed, is the Japanese sacred island of Miyajima with its famous Itsukushima Shrine and Torii. This is possibly the neatest, cleanest and most serene spot in Japan. A convalescent depot which is also much favoured as a leave resort is maintained here by the Australian Army. The Senjo-Kaku (Hall of the Thousand Mats) was dedicated to the shrine in the 16th Century, and has a Pagoda standing nearby. There are many other shrines on this island. A group of five unidentified Australian soldiers, probably members of the British Commonwealth Forces Korea (BCFK), are enjoying a day's sightseeing.
