Miyajima is a traditional home of wood carvers in Japan. Most of their trade and that of the shops on the Island is in souvenirs for the throngs of visiting pilgrims. Here unidentified Australian soldiers admire the display in a shot in Miyajima's main street, carefully swept and covered with awnings. There are very few motor vehicles on the Island.
