Description

A group of original officers of the 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment taken at Altona Bay, Victoria, where the regiment bivouacked for a week prior to embarkation from Australia for the front. Identified from left to right are: Major (Maj) T Redford, B Squadron; Lieutenant (Lt) M B Higgins, C Squadron; Maj (later Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col)) A V Deeble, C Squadron; Captain (Capt) W Mitchell, B Squadron; Lt Col Alex White, Commanding Officer; probably Lt Dale, C Squadron; Capt S Mountjoy, Veterinary Officer; Capt R E Baker, B Squadron; Maj E A Gregory, A Squadron; Lt A Crawford, A Squadron; Capt T Crowl, Adjutant; Lt L S W Anderson, A Squadron (late of Duntroon); Capt Fry, Quartermaster; Lt T Howard, A Squadron; Keith Borthwick, A Squadron; Lt G Wilson, B Squadron; Capt S Campbell, Medical Officer. Absentees are Major A McLaurin, Lt F O Thorn, Lt E Henty and Lt W Robinson, who had embarked previously with the advance party. Capt Day, Lts Arblaster, and Carthew are not mentioned. Capt Day and Lt Carthew were probably left at Broadmeadows in charge of camp and Lt Arblaster was with the advance party.
