Abstract

In this article the author talks about two soldiers who had been instrumental in the capture of Pozieres. Both were awarded medals for this action, Captain William McCann was awarded the Military Cross and Lieutenant Arthur Blackburn was awarded the Victoria Cross. The author goes onto describe the action that resulted in the capture of Pozieres which was Blackburn later went on to describe as "the biggest bastard of a job" that he had ever struck. The author concludes that Blackburn's Victoria Cross was the first of three to be won by the 10th Battalion which helped give them the reputation as the Fighting Tenth.
