| Note | Dedicated to all the women, who were in some way affiliated with the Royal Australian Navy between 1914 and 1949. Includes a Bibliography and index (pages 294-305) Previously Australian Nurses had served in the Boer War and World War One but women were not asked to serve in non-nursing positions in the Australian armed services until World War two. The late 1930s and early 1940s would have been a trying time for the Australian people who were just coming out of the Great Depression and going into World War Two. This was an era when women's lives revolved mainly around their husbands and families. A number of young Australian women would undergo dramatic life chan ges during World War Two, when the necessity arose for them to contribute in some way towards the war effort to enable men in non-combat positions to be released for combatant roles. Unlike England, where conscription was in force, which included Austral ian women who were living in England, the women in Australia were volunteers for the armed services.--Introduction. General. |
