The 1970s and 80s saw Cambodia ravaged by a destructive independence from the French in 1953. The 1970s and 80s saw Cambodia ravagedby a destructive guerilla war culminating in the deaths of millions of people under the hand of Pol Pot and the invasion of the country by Vietnam. The efforts of the international community to resolve the conflict gained impetus following the end of the Cold War. During the period from 1989 until late 1991 intensive negotiation and mediation culminated in the Paris Agreement of 23 Oct 91. This agreement formed the basis of the UN Security Council Resolutions 717 (1991) and 718 (1991) which provided th e mandates for UNAMIC and UNTAC. General. |
