Description

Italy. c. November 1943. RAF Supermarine Spitfire aircraft encountered a formation of Messerschmitt Bf109 aircraft and Focke-Wulf FW 190 aircraft, while patrolling the 'bomb-line'. Without loss to themselves they shot down three of the ME 109s and probably damaged a FW 190s. The enemy aircraft were shot down by Warrant Officer (WO) P. J. Hedderwick of Melbourne, Vic, Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) D. M. Leighton of Enfield, Middlesex, and Flt Sgt H. A. Booth of Bramley, Leeds. The probable was the work of Flt Sgt S. P. Smith of Coventry. Flt Sgt Leighton (second, left); WO Hedderwick (third, left); Flt Sgt Booth (right), give their combat report to the Intelligence Officer (left).
