Description
Research by Commander Greg Swinden about Wardmaster Lieutenant Commander Thomas Edward Mullins, DSM (1882-1960). Mullins joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Sick Berth Steward 1st Class in May 1912, having previously served six years with the Royal Navy. Mullins served on the HMAS Sydney during its engagement with the German cruiser Emden, and was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his services during the action. For much of the period following the First World War, Mullins was posted to the depot ship Penguin in Sydney. He retired from the RAN on 15 May 1937 at the rank of Wardmaster Lieutenant. In January 1957 he was promoted to the honorary rank of Wardmaster Lieutenant Commander.
