Description
Butare, Rwanda. 1994-08-26. Sergeant (Sgt) Joanne Cook of 3BASB (Brigade Administration Support Battalion) Townsville, QLD, smiles happily while washing her clothes outside in two plastic buckets. Sgt Cook is a member of the Australian Medical Support Force serving in Rwanda as part of UNAMIR (United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda) (peacekeeping). The Australians established an outposted medical treatment section compound in Butare to provide medical care for UN troops deployed to help repatriate refugees affected by the civil war. The treatment section is also to provide assistance to the CARE Australia orphanage in Butare and will begin treating locals in surrounding refugee camps.
