WEWAK AREA, NORTH EAST NEW GUINEA. C. 1945-06. A RAAF CAMERAMAN, IN A PROTECTING AIRCRAFT, PHOTOGRAPHED LIEUTENANT (LT) CARTER STANDING ALONGSIDE HIS PARACHUTE, WHICH HE HAD SPREAD ON THE GROUND AS A GUIDE FOR THE RESCUE PARTY. LT CARTER HAD BEEN FORCED TO BALE OUT WHEN HIS LIGHTNING AIRCRAFT DEVELOPED ENGINE TROUBLE AND HE LANDED WITHIN TEN MILES OF ENEMY-OCCUPIED TERRITORY. AFTER SPENDING THREE DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE AREA HE WAS RESCUED BY A RAAF SUPERMARINE WALRUS AMPHIBIAN AIRCRAFT WHICH LANDED ON A RIVER SOME 250 YARDS FROM HIS LOCATION.
