WEWAK AREA, NORTH EAST NEW GUINEA. C. 1945-06. THE SUPERMARINE WALRUS AMPHIBIAN AIRCRAFT SKIMS ALONG THE SWIFT-RUNNING WATERS OF THE KERAWARI RIVER TO RETURN TO BASE WITH THE RESCUED AMERICAN PILOT, LIEUTENANT (LT) J. P. CARTER, AND TWO NATIVE POLICE BOYS WHO HAD BEEN FLOWN IN TO ASSIST IN THE RESCUE EFFORT. THE TWO NATIVE POLICE BOYS HAD PADDLED ASHORE IN A RUBBER DINGHY AND THEN HACKED THROUGH 250 YARDS OF KUNAI GRASS TO REACH LT CARTER AND BRING HIM BACK TO THE RESCUING AIRCRAFT.
