Grave of a New Zealand, a British and an Australian serviceman in the Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. The Australian is 406 Private (Pte) Thomas Verran Hammond of the 2nd Battalion from Clyde, NSW. A 21 year old riveter prior to enlisting on 22 August 1914, he embarked for overseas from Sydney on 18 October 1914 aboard HMAT Suffolk (A23). While serving at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action on 11 June and evacuated to hospital in Malta where he had his left leg amputated. He died from his wounds on 24 July 1915.
