FIVE MONTHS BEFORE HIS DEATH HE WAS COMMISSIONED AS SUBALTERN OF THE 6TH BATTALION. HE DIED IN SEPTEMBER 1917 EAST OF YPRES, BELGIUM, AND WAS AWARDED THE VICTORIA CROSS POSTHUMOUSLY FOR HIS `CONSPICUOUS BRAVERY'.
