Description

England, 1918. Lieutenant William Henry Vaughan Edgar DSC, RAN, with a party of civilians on HMAS Australia. Artificer Engineer Edgar, whilst serving on HMAS Australia, volunteered to serve in the raid on Zeebrugge and Ostend in Belgium and was appointed engineer of HMS Iris. During the raid on 22-23 April 1918 he worked unceasingly to keep the ship going while under heavy fire. After the bridge was shot away he showed great bravery in coming onto the upper deck to turn on the smoke apparatus, so that Iris could safely withdraw without further loss. For his part in the raid Edgar was recommended for special promotion to Lieutenant and was awarded the DSC, the only member of the RAN to receive this award during World War 1. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander on 23 April 1926. (Original print held in AWM Archive Store) (Donors I. and N. Preece)
