Mena Camp, Egypt. c. 1915-01. Sitting on a makeshift step in front of a tent pitched in the sand, two members of the 1st Australian Divisional Signal Company read letters from home while two other unit members look on. Left to right: back row: Sapper (Spr) George Gibson Paterson, a despatch rider; Sergeant William Charles McCutchan. Front row: Dick Ellis, who is smoking a pipe; 36 Spr John Thomas (Jock) Nicholls, who is holding a rifle. Set up inside the tent is a box bearing the trademark or label of Kiwi Boot Polish. Paterson later won an MM and an MC, and McCutchan an MC, DCM and MBE.
