Dobodura, New Guinea. 1943-02-02. Skin, finger nails and charred bones taken from a Japanese prisoner of war (POW) in the Gona area are laid out on a piece of cloth at the Headquarters of the 41st Division, US Army. Japanese custom was to cut off a dead friend's hand, skin it, char the flesh and bones, and send the mementos to the dead man's family. (Donor D. Atkinson)
