Reichersbeuern, Bavaria, Germany. 1928. Informal group portrait of, from left, unknown, Ivor Hele, Bert ?, unknown and an unknown local young man wearing Lederhosen. Bert and the girl beside him have a foot resting on a piano accordion. Ivor Hele convinced his parents to allow him to study art in Europe and he left in 1927, aged fifteen. He spent some time studying in Munich with Professor Moritz Heymann, who conducted a summer school in the Bavarian Alps. SX7174 Private Ivor Henry Thomas Hele sailed for the Middle East with the 2/48th Battalion. He was promoted to lieutenant then temporary captain before his appointment as an Official War Artist on 11 October 1941. Ivor Hele also served in New Guinea, Japan and Korea. (Donor M. Rankin)
