Egypt. 1941. Official War Artist SX7174 Captain Ivor Henry Thomas Hele, holding a paint brush and rag, looks at his painting 'Typical Digger', the subject of this portrait is George Budd, 6th Division, AIF. Captain Hele, who enlisted on 29 June 1940, sailed for the Middle East on 17 November 1940 as a private with the 2/48th Battalion. He was promoted to lieutenant then temporary captain before his appointment as an Official War Artist on 11 October 1941. He served in New Guinea from 11 June 1943 to 22 August 1943 and also from 19 October 1944 to 19 January 1945. On 2 April 1952, Ivor Hele was appointed a temporary major, army number SX700092, in the Royal Australian Infantry, Army Headquarters, and served in Japan and Korea as an Official War Artist.
